Noir Float Privacy Policy
Last updated: 4 November 2026
Noir Float collects no personal data and shares nothing with anyone. Its only online step is asking the Microsoft Store about your licence.
What Noir Float reads on your computer
To work as a sidebar, Noir Float reads these things on your own computer:
- Your Windows account name, account picture and the email address of the Microsoft account you sign in with, to show them at the foot of the sidebar.
- How many windows are open, to show the number beside Open windows.
- The dates of the files in your Downloads folder, to count new downloads. It does not open or read the files.
- How many items are in the Recycle Bin.
- Whether your computer is online, for the dot on your picture.
- The list of apps installed for you, and their icons, for search.
- Your Windows light or dark setting.
- The position of your pointer, and where the window in front sits, so the sidebar can step aside.
- How bright the screen is in a narrow strip just beside the sidebar, every second and a half, so the sidebar can darken its glass and keep its words readable over a bright picture. Only one brightness number is kept, and only in memory.
- Your wallpaper picture, only while Windows Energy Saver is on, to show it softly blurred behind the glass. It is read in memory and not copied anywhere.
The keyboard
Noir Float registers one shortcut with Windows, Ctrl+Alt+Space, to open its search. Windows tells it only when that shortcut is pressed; Noir Float does not watch any other keys. Text you type into its search box is used only to find apps while the box is open, and is not saved.
What Noir Float changes
Nothing. Noir Float changes no Windows settings. Its Dark mode switch changes only Noir Float's own glass. Start with Windows, when you turn it on, asks Windows to open Noir Float when you sign in.
What Noir Float saves
It saves your settings, the apps and folders you add, a copy of any picture you choose for its logo, the apps you recently opened from its search, where you placed the sidebar on the screen, when you last opened Downloads from it, and a log of any errors. All of this stays in the app's own folder on your computer. Uninstalling Noir Float removes it.
Your trial and purchase
Noir Float has a free trial and is then a paid app. It asks Windows and the Microsoft Store whether your trial is running or the app has been bought, and what it costs. If you press Buy, the Microsoft Store shows its own window and takes the payment. Noir Float never sees your payment details, and Microsoft's own privacy statement covers that step.
What Noir Float does not do
- It has no servers of its own and sends none of your information anywhere.
- It has no accounts of its own, and no advertising, analytics or tracking.
- It does not read what is inside your apps or files.
- It does not record, save or send your screen or your keyboard. The brightness reading above is a single number, thrown away when it is replaced.
Children
Noir Float collects no information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will appear on this page with a new date.
